BIOGRAPHY OF ELAYNE TANNER

Elayne Tanner has a Masters Degree in Social Work, having graduated with Distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1992. Since obtaining her Masters Degree, she has been providing private Psychotherapy and Counselling to individuals, couples, adolescents and children in the Milton area.

She brings a wide and varied range of experiences to her work. After obtaining two undergraduate degrees from York University, she began her career in Social Work in a variety of different institutional settings. In order to gain the widest experience she worked in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and health care centres. While working for the Halton Children’s Aid Society she was a Child and Family Specialist and an Abuse Investigator. She has also taught Sociology at Sheridan College.

All of these experiences allow Elayne to bring a unique perspective to her work.

She has always been a committed advocate of continued learning for those in her profession. She has continued to take highly specialized training in such therapies as Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Intensive Sex Therapy and Hypnosis. Elayne believes that to be current in new techniques is to be able to provide the right therapeutic intervention for her clients.

Elayne is president of Elayne Tanner & Associates Inc.  Elayne Tanner & Associates Inc. is unique in that it is one of the first corporations to be created in Ontario by a social worker for the sole purpose of providing counselling and a full range of other related services to both individuals and companies.  She is one of the first in her profession to see the benefits of forming Strategic Alliances with other social workers and related health care workers for the mutual business benefit of all.

In many ways she has been ahead of her time in her approach to her profession. The need for continued learning and upgrading of skills, the need for liability insurance, registration in professional organizations, and accountability have all been the benchmarks of a regulated profession and Elayne has been a strong proponent of these, long before Social Work became a Regulated Profession in Ontario on August 15th, 2000.

So strong is her commitment to her profession and the credibility of it, that she has co-authored a book Managing A Legal and Ethical Social Work Practice published by Irwin Law in 2003.

Elayne is able to merge the philosophy of Social Work with the philosophy of running a small business in a way that not only works, but also provides the very best possible service to her clients.
