Q: My New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. I have tried unsuccessfully many times before. You offer hypnosis and I wonder if that could help me?
A: Many people have found that hypnosis has successfully helped them in the battle with weight. Hypnosis is a natural, normal state of mind that allows access to your subconscious. With hypnosis you enter a state of physical and mental relaxation. When your mind relaxes, it’s concentration powers increase tremendously and you are more open to accepting new thoughts and feelings. Under hypnosis, your subconscious mind can be reached directly, allowing you to develop new attitudes and behaviours. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we all slip into in our daily lives. We often refer to it as daydreaming. It is completely safe and has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958 as a viable form of treatment.
When you are under hypnosis you feel relaxed, but you can hear everything, think, scratch, talk and make decisions. You can also choose to come out of trance at any time. You are always in control. You will not do or say anything that you would not normally do or say. There is no way that you will violate your own sense of morality or give away any secrets. There is also no way that you can get stuck in hypnosis. Even if the therapist left the room, you would just come out of trance as if from a light sleep. You will always know where you are, hear everything around you and be aware of what is going on at all times. In fact your senses may be heightened. During the hypnotic state, you will receive the suggestions agreed upon by yourself and your hypnotherapist—in this case they would be related to weight loss and new attitudes to food and yourself. These suggestions are designed to cater to the ways in which your subconscious mind processes information. Under hypnosis, you are also taught a simple self hypnosis technique so that your treatment can continue at home. You then awake feeling relaxed and energized.
I offer weight loss hypnosis in two formats—individually and in groups. With individual sessions, the cost is somewhat greater but you get the individualized attention. With groups, you loose some of this but gain the benefit of support from others, with the reduced cost. If you are interested in pursuing either of these avenues, please call and we can discuss it further.
